Verizon Reseller Manager Accused of Accessing Customer Data

Mahwah, NJ — A store manager at a Verizon third-party reseller in Mahwah is facing charges after allegedly accessing a customer's locked smartphone without permission, viewing emails, deleting personal data, and posting fraudulent reviews.

The incident happened at the Verizon location inside the Acme shopping center on Franklin Turnpike. According to Mahwah Police, Alexander Khoury, 31, of Union City, NJ, was working at the store when a customer noticed a locked note left open on her screen. Soon after, she began receiving strange emails and discovered messages had been deleted from her device.

Detective Christopher Fasulo led the investigation, which tied the unauthorized activity back to Khoury. He has been charged with a computer crime and was released on a summons pending a court appearance in Hackensack.

This was not a corporate Verizon store but a third-party reseller. That distinction matters. Many customers and business owners walk into these stores assuming staff are directly employed and vetted by Verizon, which is not always the case.

Device security tips for business owners and staff

  • Never give your PIN or passcode to anyone, even if they say it's needed for a data transfer or setup.
  • Don't be rushed into surrendering your device. You typically have up to 30 days to activate or migrate data from an old device. Take time to back up and wipe it properly.
  • Perform a factory reset yourself, or stay present and observe the process if a technician handles it.
  • Be cautious with any personal or business-sensitive data on a mobile device. There have been cases of improper access when devices are left unattended.
  • Use multi-factor authentication for all business-critical apps, especially email, cloud storage, and mobile device management platforms.

Note: These are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
