Meta Tag

Many web pages have Meta Tags, although they are not required. This tag does not appear anywhere on the web page, but instead is hidden in the code. Search Engines do see and index these tags.

The value of meta tags for search engine optimization is vague and ever changing. Since meta tags are not viewable by the web site visitor, their Relevance for specific search terms is debatable. Nothing prevents the webmaster from including terms that have nothing to do with the topic of the page, in an effort to boost search engine rankings. Google is certainly too sophisticated to be taken in by such a ruse, and will actually penalize a page for this practice in it's rankings.
